Faith-based films rank among best “low-budget breakout” films

The American Film Market provides some very useful information on filmmaking trends and statistics. One of the most interesting articles they’ve published reveals that faith films are among the best performers in the coveted “low-budget breakout” category. They share this along with horror and high-quality dramas.

The consistent characteristics of faith films is that they are low quality, receive “incredibly poor” reviews, are overly long averaging 110 minutes, and they make most of their money in the American market–the don’t export well.

This data is interesting, but somewhat out-of-date as it was last updated in 2017. They examined the top 100 most profitable low-budget films made for under $3 million dollars. Only seven faith films fall that category:

• Courageous

• The Grace Card

• Facing the Giants

• Fireproof

• War Room

• To Save a Life

• God’s Not Dead

Those are the seven films, listed in order of the best overall reviewed to worst, which is a mix of Metascore and IMdb audience score. Metascore rated The Grace Card and Courageous as the best of these faith films. IMdb audience scored To Save a Life and Courageous as the best. The worst film by both rankings is God’s Not Dead. The one oddity is that To Save a Life was the highest IMdb audience score while it barely edged above God’s Not Dead for worst Metascore.
